Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord

First Reading

Acts 1:1-11

In my earlier work, Theophilus, I dealt with everything Jesus has done and taught from the beginning until the day he gave his instructions to the apostles he had chosen through the Holy Spirit, and was taken up to heaven. He had shown himself alive to them after his Passion by many demonstrations: for forty days he had continued to appear t them and tell them about the kingdom of God. When he had been at table with them, he had told them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for what the Father had promised. 'It is,' he said, 'what you have heard me speak about: John baptised with water but you, not many days from now, will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.'

Now having met together, they asked him, 'Lord, has the time come? Are you going to restore the kingdom to Israel?' He has decided by his own authority, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and then you will be my witnesses not only in Jerusalem but throughout Judaea and Samaria, and indeed to the ends of the earth.'

As he said this he was lifted up while they looked on, and a cloud took him from their sight. They were still staring into the sky when suddenly two men in white were standing near and they said, 'Why are you men from Galilee standing here looking into the sky? Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven, this same Jesus will come back in the same way as you have seen him go there.'

Responsorial Psalm Ps 46:2-3.6-9

For the Lord, the Most High, we must fear,

Second Reading

Eph 4:1-7, 11-13

I, the prisoner on the Lord, implore you to lead a life worthy of your vocation. Bear with one another charitably, in complete selflessness, gentleness and patience. Do all you can to preserve the unity of the Spirit by the peace that binds you together. There is one Body, one Spirit, just as you were all called into one and the same hope when you were called. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God who is Father of all, over all, through all and within all.

Each one of us, however, has been given his own share of grace, given as Christ allotted it. It was said that he would:

When he ascended to the height, he captured prisoners, he have gifts to men.

When it says, 'he ascended', what can it mean if not that he descended right down to the lower regions of the earth? The one who rose higher than all the heavens to fill all things is none other than the one who descended. And to some, his gift was that they should be apostles; to some, prophets; to some, evangelists; to some, pastors and teachers; so that the saints together make a unity in the work of service, building up the body of Christ. In this way we are all to come to unity in our faith and in our knowledge of the Son of God, until we become the perfect Man, fully mature with the fullness of Christ himself.

Gospel

Mark 16:15-20

Jesus showed himself to the Eleven, and said to them, 'Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News to all creation. He who believes and is baptised will be saved; he who does not believe will be condemned. These are the signs that will be associated with believers: in my name they will cast out devils; they will have the gift of tongues they will pick up snakes in their hands, and be unharmed should they drink deadly poison; they will lay their hands in the sick, who will recover.'

And so the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven: there at the right hand of God he took his place, while they, going out, preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word by the signs that accompanied it.

Commencement du livre des Actes des Apôtres

Mon cher Théophile, dans mon premier livre j’ai parlé de tout ce que Jésus a fait et enseigné depuis le commencement jusqu’au jour où il fut enlevé au ciel après avoir, dans l’Esprit Saint, donné ses instructions aux Apôtres qu’il avait choisis. C’est à eux qu’il s’était montré vivant après sa Passion : il leur en avait donné bien des preuves, puisque pendant quarante jours il leur était apparu, et leur avait parlé du Royaume de Dieu.

Au cours d’un repas qu’il prenait avec eux, il leur donna l’ordre de ne pas quitter Jérusalem mais d’y attendre ce que le Père avait promis. Il leur disait : “C’est la promesse que vous avez entendue de ma bouche. Jean a baptisé avec de l’eau, mais vous c’est dans l’Esprit Saint que vous serez baptisés d’ici quelques jours.” Réunis autour de lui, les Apôtres lui demandaient : “Seigneur, est-ce maintenant que tu vas rétablir la royauté en Israël ?” Jésus leur répondit : “Il ne vous appartient pas de connaître les délais et les dates que le Père a fixés dans sa liberté souveraine. Mais vous allez recevoir une force, celle du Saint-Esprit qui viendra sur vous. Alors vous serez mes témoins à Jérusalem, dans toute la Judée et la Samarie, et jusqu’aux extrémités de la terre.”

Après ces paroles, ils le virent s’élever et disparaître à leurs yeux dans une nuée. Et, comme ils fixaient encore le ciel où Jésus s’en allait, voici que deux hommes en vêtements blancs se tenaient devant eux et disaient : “Galiléens, pourquoi restez-vous là à regarder vers le ciel ? Jésus, qui a été enlevé du milieu de vous, reviendra de la même manière que vous l’avez vu s’en aller vers le ciel.”

Psaume 46 (47) Ps 46, 2-3, 6-7, 8-9

R. Dieu monte parmi l’acclamation, le Seigneur, aux éclats du cor.

Tous les peuples, battez des mains,

acclamez Dieu par vos cris de joie !

Car le Seigneur est le Très-Haut, le redoutable,

Deuxième lecture Ep 4, 1-13

Lecture de la lettre de saint Paul Apôtre aux Éphésiens

Frères, moi qui suis en prison à cause du Seigneur, je vous encourage à suivre fidèlement l’appel que vous avez reçu de Dieu : ayez beaucoup d'humilité, de douceur et de patience, supportez-vous les uns les autres avec amour ; ayez à coeur de garder l'unité dans l'Esprit par le lien de la paix. Comme votre vocation vous a tous appelés à une seule espérance, de même il n'y a qu'un seul Corps et un seul Esprit. Il n'y a qu'un seul Seigneur, une seule foi, un seul baptême, un seul Dieu et Père de tous, qui règne au-dessus de tous, par tous, et en tous. Chacun d'entre nous a reçu le don de la grâce comme le Christ nous l'a partagée. C'est pourquoi l'Écriture dit : Il est monté sur la hauteur, emmenant des prisonniers, il a fait des dons aux hommes. Que veut dire : Il est monté ? Cela veut dire qu'il était d'abord descendu jusqu'en bas sur la terre. Et celui qui était descendu est le même qui est monté au plus haut des cieux pour combler tout l'univers. Et les dons qu'il a faits aux hommes, ce sont d'abord les Apôtres, puis les prophètes et les missionnaires de l'Évangile, et aussi les pasteurs et ceux qui enseignent. De cette manière, le peuple saint est organisé pour que les tâches du ministère soient accomplies, et que se construise le corps du Christ. Au terme, nous parviendrons tous ensemble à l'unité dans la foi et la vraie connaissance du Fils de Dieu, à l'état de l'Homme parfait, à la plénitude de la stature du Christ.

Evangile Mc 16, 15-20

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Marc

Jésus ressuscité dit aux onze Apôtres : “Allez dans le monde entier. Proclamez la Bonne Nouvelle à toute la création. Celui qui croira et sera baptisé sera sauvé ; celui qui refusera de croire sera condamné. Voici les signes qui accompagneront ceux qui deviendront croyants : en mon nom, ils chasseront les esprits mauvais ; ils parleront un langage nouveau ; ils prendront des serpents dans leurs mains, et, s’ils boivent un poison mortel, il ne leur fera pas de mal ; ils imposeront les mains aux malades, et les malades s’en trouveront bien.”

Le Seigneur Jésus, après leur avoir parlé, fut enlevé au ciel et s’assit à la droite de Dieu. Quant à eux, ils s’en allèrent proclamer partout la Bonne Nouvelle. Le Seigneur travaillait avec eux et confirmait la Parole par les signes qui l’accompagnaient.

Im ersten Buch, lieber Theophilus, habe ich über alles berichtet, was Jesus getan und gelehrt hat, bis zu dem Tag, an dem er (in den Himmel) aufgenommen wurde. Vorher hat er durch den Heiligen Geist den Aposteln, die er sich erwählt hatte, Anweisungen gegeben. Ihnen hat er nach seinem Leiden durch viele Beweise gezeigt, dass er lebt; vierzig Tage hindurch ist er ihnen erschienen und hat vom Reich Gottes gesprochen. Beim gemeinsamen Mahl gebot er ihnen: Geht nicht weg von Jerusalem, sondern wartet auf die Verheißung des Vaters, die ihr von mir vernommen habt. Johannes hat mit Wasser getauft, ihr aber werdet schon in wenigen Tagen mit dem Heiligen Geist getauft. Als sie nun beisammen waren, fragten sie ihn: Herr, stellst du in dieser Zeit das Reich für Israel wieder her? Er sagte zu ihnen: Euch steht es nicht zu, Zeiten und Fristen zu erfahren, die der Vater in seiner Macht festgesetzt hat.

Aber ihr werdet die Kraft des Heiligen Geistes empfangen, der auf euch herabkommen wird; und ihr werdet meine Zeugen sein in Jerusalem und in ganz Judäa und Samarien und bis an die Grenzen der Erde. Als er das gesagt hatte, wurde er vor ihren Augen emporgehoben, und eine Wolke nahm ihn auf und entzog ihn ihren Blicken. Während sie unverwandt ihm nach zum Himmel emporschauten, standen plötzlich zwei Männer in weißen Gewändern bei ihnen und sagten: Ihr Männer von Galiläa, was steht ihr da und schaut zum Himmel empor? Dieser Jesus, der von euch ging und in den Himmel aufgenommen wurde, wird ebenso wiederkommen, wie ihr ihn habt zum Himmel hingehen sehen.

2. LESUNG Eph 1, 17-23

Lesung aus dem Brief an die Epheser

Der Gott Jesu Christi, unseres Herrn, der Vater der Herrlichkeit, gebe euch den Geist der Weisheit und Offenbarung, damit ihr ihn erkennt. Er erleuchte die Augen eures Herzens, damit ihr versteht, zu welcher Hoffnung ihr durch ihn berufen seid, welchen Reichtum die Herrlichkeit seines Erbes den Heiligen schenkt und wie überragend groß seine Macht sich an uns, den Gläubigen, erweist durch das Wirken seiner Kraft und Stärke. Er hat sie an Christus erwiesen, den er von den Toten auferweckt und im Himmel auf den Platz zu seiner Rechten erhoben hat, hoch über alle Fürsten und Gewalten, Mächte und Herrschaften und über jeden Namen, der nicht nur in dieser Welt, sondern auch in der zukünftigen genannt wird. Alles hat er ihm zu Füßen gelegt und ihn, der als Haupt alles überragt, über die Kirche gesetzt. Sie ist sein Leib und wird von ihm erfüllt, der das All ganz und gar beherrscht.

EVANGELIUM Mk 16, 15-20

Dann sagte er zu ihnen: Geht hinaus in die ganze Welt, und verkündet das Evangelium allen Geschöpfen!

Wer glaubt und sich taufen lässt, wird gerettet; wer aber nicht glaubt, wird verdammt werden.

Und durch die, die zum Glauben gekommen sind, werden folgende Zeichen geschehen: In meinem Namen werden sie Dämonen austreiben; sie werden in neuen Sprachen reden; wenn sie Schlangen anfassen oder tödliches Gift trinken, wird es ihnen nicht schaden; und die Kranken, denen sie die Hände auflegen, werden gesund werden.

Nachdem Jesus, der Herr, dies zu ihnen gesagt hatte, wurde er in den Himmel aufgenommen und setzte sich zur Rechten Gottes.

Sie aber zogen aus und predigten überall. Der Herr stand ihnen bei und bekräftigte die Verkündigung durch die Zeichen, die er geschehen ließ.
