Reading I

Is 9:1-6

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone. You have brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing, as they rejoice before you as at the harvest, as people make merry when dividing spoils. For the yoke that burdened them, the pole on their shoulder, and the rod of their taskmaster you have smashed, as on the day of Midian.

For every boot that tramped in battle, every cloak rolled in blood, will be burned as fuel for flames. For a child is born to us, a son is given us; upon his shoulder dominion rests. They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace. His dominion is vast and forever peaceful, from David's throne, and over his kingdom, which he confirms and sustains by judgment and justice, both now and forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this!

Reading II

Ti 2:11-14

Beloved:

The grace of God has appeared, saving all and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age, as we await the blessed hope, the appearance of the glory of our great God and savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to deliver us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people as his own, eager to do what is good.

Gospel

Lk 2:1-14

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole world should be enrolled.

This was the first enrollment, when Quirinius was governor of Syria.

So all went to be enrolled, each to his own town.

And Joseph too went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David that is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.

While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son.

She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields

and keeping the night watch over their flock.

The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear.

The angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Christ and Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger."

And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: "Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests."

Première Lecture

Lecture du livre de Isaïe, 9, 2-7.

Le peuple qui marchait dans les ténèbres a vu se lever une grande lumière ; sur ceux qui habitaient le pays de l’ombre une lumière a resplendi. Tu as prodigué l’allégresse, Tu as fait grandir la joie : ils se réjouissent devant Toi comme on se réjouit en faisant la moisson, comme on exulte en partageant les dépouilles des vaincus. Car le joug qui pesait sur eux, le bâton qui meurtrissait leurs épaules, le fouet du chef de corvée, Tu les as brisés comme au jour de la victoire sur Madiane. Toutes les chaussures des soldats qui piétinaient bruyamment le sol, tous leurs manteaux couverts de sang, les voilà brûlés : le feu les a dévorés. Oui ! un enfant nous est né, un fils nous a été donné ; l’insigne du pouvoir est sur son épaule ; on proclame son nom : “Merveilleux-Conseiller, Dieu-Fort, Père-à-Jamais, Prince-de-la-Paix.” Ainsi le pouvoir s’étendra, la paix sera sans fin pour David et pour son royaume. Il sera solidement établi sur le droit et la justice dès maintenant et pour toujours. Voilà ce que fait l’amour invincible du Seigneur de l’Univers.

R. Aujourd’hui un Sauveur nous est né : c’est le Christ, le Seigneur.

Chantez au Seigneur un chant nouveau,

chantez au Seigneur, terre entière,

chantez au Seigneur et bénissez son nom ! R.

De jour en jour, proclamez son salut,

racontez à tous les peuples sa gloire,

à toutes les nations ses merveilles ! R.

Joie au ciel !

Exulte la terre !

Les masses de la mer mugissent,

la campagne tout entière est en fête. R.

Les arbres des forêts dansent de joie

devant la face du Seigneur, car il vient,

pour gouverner le monde avec justice. R.

Epître

Lecture de la lettre de saint Paul à Tite 2, 11-14.

La grâce de Dieu s'est manifestée pour le salut de tous les hommes. C'est elle qui nous apprend à rejeter le péché et les passions d'ici-bas, pour vivre dans le monde présent en hommes raisonnables, justes et religieux, et pour attendre le bonheur que nous espérons avoir quand se manifestera la gloire de Jésus-Christ, notre grand Dieu et notre Sauveur. Car il s'est donné pour nous afin de nous racheter de toutes nos fautes, et de nous purifier pour faire de nous son peuple, un peuple ardent à faire le bien.

En ces jours-là, parut un édit de l'empereur Auguste, ordonnant de recenser toute la terre - Ce premier recensement eut lieu lorsque Quirinius était gouverneur de Syrie. - Et chacun allait se faire inscrire dans sa ville d'origine. Joseph, lui aussi, quitta la ville de Nazareth en Galilée, pour monter en Judée, à la ville de David appelée Bethléem, car il était de la maison et de la descendance de David. Il venait se faire inscrire avec Marie, son épouse, qui était enceinte.

Or, pendant qu'ils étaient là, arrivèrent les jours où elle devait enfanter. Et elle mit au monde son fils premier-né; elle l'emmaillota et le coucha dans une mangeoire, car il n'y avait pas de place pour eux dans la salle commune.

Dans les environs se trouvaient des bergers qui passaient la nuit dans les champs pour garder leurs troupeaux. L'Ange du Seigneur s'approcha, et la gloire du Seigneur les enveloppa de sa lumière. Ils furent saisis d'une grande crainte, mais l'ange leur dit : « Ne craignez pas, car voici que je viens vous annoncer une bonne nouvelle, une grande joie pour tout le peuple : aujourd'hui vous est né un Sauveur, dans la ville de David. Il est le Messie, le Seigneur. Et voilà le signe qui vous est donné : vous trouverez un nouveau-né emmailloté et couché dans une mangeoire. » Et soudain il y eut avec l'ange une troupe céleste innombrable, qui louait Dieu en disant : « Gloire à Dieu au plus haut des cieux, et paix sur la terre aux hommes de bonne volonté. »

1. Lesung Jes 9, 1-6

Lesung aus dem Buch Jesaja

Das Volk, das im Dunkel lebt, sieht ein helles Licht; über denen, die im Land der Finsternis wohnen, strahlt ein Licht auf.

Du erregst lauten Jubel und schenkst große Freude. Man freut sich in deiner Nähe, wie man sich freut bei der Ernte, wie man jubelt, wenn Beute verteilt wird.

Denn wie am Tag von Midian zerbrichst du das drückende Joch, das Tragholz auf unserer Schulter und den Stock des Treibers.

Jeder Stiefel, der dröhnend daherstampft, jeder Mantel, der mit Blut befleckt ist, wird verbrannt, wird ein Fraß des Feuers.

Denn uns ist ein Kind geboren, ein Sohn ist uns geschenkt. Die Herrschaft liegt auf seiner Schulter; man nennt ihn: Wunderbarer Ratgeber, Starker Gott, Vater in Ewigkeit, Fürst des Friedens.

Seine Herrschaft ist groß, und der Friede hat kein Ende. Auf dem Thron Davids herrscht er über sein Reich; er festigt und stützt es durch Recht und Gerechtigkeit, jetzt und für alle Zeiten. Der leidenschaftliche Eifer des Herrn der Heere wird das vollbringen.

R. Heute ist uns der Heiland geboren: Christus, der Herr.

Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied,

2. Lesung Tit 2, 11-14

Lesung aus dem Brief des Apostels Paulus an Titus

Denn die Gnade Gottes ist erschienen, um alle Menschen zu retten.

Sie erzieht uns dazu, uns von der Gottlosigkeit und den irdischen Begierden loszusagen und besonnen, gerecht und fromm in dieser Welt zu leben, während wir auf die selige Erfüllung unserer Hoffnung warten: auf das Erscheinen der Herrlichkeit unseres großen Gottes und Retters Christus Jesus.

Er hat sich für uns hingegeben, um uns von aller Schuld zu erlösen und sich ein reines Volk zu schaffen, das ihm als sein besonderes Eigentum gehört und voll Eifer danach strebt, das Gute zu tun.

Evangelium Lk 2, 1-14

Aus dem heiligen Evangelium nach Lukas

In jenen Tagen erließ Kaiser Augustus den Befehl, alle Bewohner des Reiches in Steuerlisten einzutragen.

Dies geschah zum ersten Mal; damals war Quirinius Statthalter von Syrien.

Da ging jeder in seine Stadt, um sich eintragen zu lassen.

So zog auch Josef von der Stadt Nazaret in Galiläa hinauf nach Judäa in die Stadt Davids, die Betlehem heißt; denn er war aus dem Haus und Geschlecht Davids.

Er wollte sich eintragen lassen mit Maria, seiner Verlobten, die ein Kind erwartete.

Als sie dort waren, kam für Maria die Zeit ihrer Niederkunft, und sie gebar ihren Sohn, den Erstgeborenen. Sie wickelte ihn in Windeln und legte ihn in eine Krippe, weil in der Herberge kein Platz für sie war.

In jener Gegend lagerten Hirten auf freiem Feld und hielten Nachtwache bei ihrer Herde.

Da trat der Engel des Herrn zu ihnen, und der Glanz des Herrn umstrahlte sie. Sie fürchteten sich sehr, der Engel aber sagte zu ihnen: Fürchtet euch nicht, denn ich verkünde euch eine große Freude, die dem ganzen Volk zuteil werden soll: Heute ist euch in der Stadt Davids der Retter geboren; er ist der Messias, der Herr. Und das soll euch als Zeichen dienen: Ihr werdet ein Kind finden, das, in Windeln gewickelt, in einer Krippe liegt.

Und plötzlich war bei dem Engel ein großes himmlisches Heer, das Gott lobte und sprach: Verherrlicht ist Gott in der Höhe, und auf Erden ist Friede bei den Menschen seiner Gnade.
