FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Reading 1

Jer 1:4-5, 17-19

The word of the LORD came to me, saying:

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,

before you were born I dedicated you,

a prophet to the nations I appointed you.

But do you gird your loins;

stand up and tell them

all that I command you.

Be not crushed on their account,

as though I would leave you crushed before them;

for it is I this day

who have made you a fortified city,

a pillar of iron, a wall of brass,

against the whole land:

against Judah’s kings and princes,

against its priests and people.

They will fight against you but not prevail over you,

for I am with you to deliver you, says the LORD.

Responsorial Psalm

Ps 71:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 15-17

R. I will sing of your salvation.

In you, O LORD, I take refuge;

let me never be put to shame.

In your justice rescue me, and deliver me;

incline your ear to me, and save me.

1 Cor 12:31—13:13

Brothers and sisters:

Strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts.

But I shall show you a still more excellent way.

If I speak in human and angelic tongues,

but do not have love,

I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal.

And if I have the gift of prophecy,

and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge;

if I have all faith so as to move mountains,

but do not have love, I am nothing.

If I give away everything I own,

and if I hand my body over so that I may boast,

but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind.

It is not jealous, it is not pompous,

It is not inflated, it is not rude,

it does not seek its own interests,

it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury,

it does not rejoice over wrongdoing

but rejoices with the truth.

It bears all things, believes all things,

hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never fails.

If there are prophecies, they will be brought to nothing;

if tongues, they will cease;

if knowledge, it will be brought to nothing.

For we know partially and we prophesy partially,

but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.

When I was a child, I used to talk as a child,

think as a child, reason as a child;

when I became a man, I put aside childish things.

At present we see indistinctly, as in a mirror,

but then face to face.

At present I know partially;

then I shall know fully, as I am fully known.

So faith, hope, love remain, these three;

but the greatest of these is love.

Gospel

Lk 4:21-30

Jesus began speaking in the synagogue, saying:

“Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”

And all spoke highly of him

and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth.

They also asked, “Isn’t this the son of Joseph?”

He said to them, “Surely you will quote me this proverb,

‘Physician, cure yourself,’ and say,

‘Do here in your native place

the things that we heard were done in Capernaum.’”

And he said, “Amen, I say to you,

no prophet is accepted in his own native place.

Indeed, I tell you,

there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah

when the sky was closed for three and a half years

and a severe famine spread over the entire land.

It was to none of these that Elijah was sent,

but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon.

Again, there were many lepers in Israel

during the time of Elisha the prophet;

yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”

When the people in the synagogue heard this,

they were all filled with fury.

They rose up, drove him out of the town,

and led him to the brow of the hill

on which their town had been built,

to hurl him down headlong.

But Jesus passed through the midst of them and went away.

Première Lecture

Lecture du livre de Jérémie (1, 4-5. 17-19)

Le Seigneur m’adressa la parole et me dit : “Avant même de te former dans le sein de ta mère, je te connaissais ; avant que tu viennes au jour, je t’ai consacré ; je fais de toi un prophète pour les peuples. Lève-toi, tu prononceras contre eux tout ce que je t’ordonnerai. Ne tremble pas devant eux, sinon, c’est moi qui te ferai trembler devant eux. Moi, je fais de toi aujourd’hui une ville fortifiée, une colonne de fer, un rempart de bronze, pour faire face à tout le pays, aux rois de Juda et à ses chefs, à ses prêtres et à tout le peuple. Ils te combattront, mais ils ne pourront rien contre toi, car je suis avec toi pour te délivrer. Parole du Seigneur.”

Psaume 70 [71]

R.- Sans fin je proclamerai ta victoire et ton salut.

Seigneur mon Dieu, tu es mon espérance,

mon appui dès ma jeunesse.

Toi, mon soutien dès avant ma naissance,

tu m’as choisi dès le ventre de ma mère. R.-

Pour beaucoup, je fus comme un prodige ;

tu as été mon secours et ma force.

Je n’avais que ta louange à la bouche,

tout le jour, ta splendeur. R.-

tes actes de justice et de salut.

Deuxième Lecture

Lecture de la première lettre de saint Paul Apôtre aux Corinthiens (12,31 - 13,13)

Frères, parmi les dons de Dieu, vous cherchez à obtenir ce qu’il y a de meilleur. Eh bien, je vais vous indiquer une voie supérieure à toutes les autres.

J’aurais beau parler toutes les langues de la terre et du ciel, si je n’ai pas la charité, s’il me manque l’amour, je ne suis qu’un cuivre qui résonne, une cymbale retentissante J’aurais beau être prophète, avoir toute la science des mystères et toute la connaissance de Dieu, et toute la foi jusqu’à transporter les montagnes, s’il me manque l’amour, je ne suis rien. J’aurais beau distribuer toute ma fortune aux affamés, j’aurais beau me faire brûler vif, s’il me manque l’amour, cela ne me sert à rien.

L’amour prend patience ; l’amour rend service, l’amour ne jalouse pas ; il ne se vante pas, ne se gonfle pas d’orgueil ; il ne fait rien de malhonnête ; il ne cherche pas son intérêt ; il ne s’emporte pas ; il n’entretient pas de rancune ; il ne se réjouit pas de ce qui est mal, mais il trouve sa joie dans ce qui est vrai ; il supporte tout, il fait confiance en tout, il espère tout, il endure tout.

L’amour ne passera jamais. Un jour, les prophéties disparaîtront, le don des langues cessera, la connaissance que nous avons de Dieu disparaîtra. En effet, notre connaissance est partielle, nos prophéties sont partielles. Quand viendra l’achèvement, ce qui est partiel disparaîtra. Quand j’étais un enfant, je parlais comme un enfant, je pensais comme un enfant, je raisonnais comme un enfant. Maintenant que je suis un homme, j’ai fait disparaître ce qui faisait de moi un enfant. Nous voyons actuellement une image obscure dans un miroir ; ce jour-là, nous verrons face à face. Actuellement, ma connaissance est partielle ; ce jour-là, je connaîtrai vraiment, comme Dieu m’a connu. Ce qui demeure aujourd’hui, c’est la foi, l’espérance et la charité ; mais la plus grande des trois, c’est la charité.

Évangile

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc (4, 21-30)

Dans la synagogue de Nazareth, après la lecture du livre d’Isaïe, Jésus déclara: “Cette parole de l’Écriture que vous venez d’entendre, c’est aujourd’hui qu’elle s accomplit.” Tous lui rendaient témoignage ; et ils s’étonnaient du message de grâce qui sortait de sa bouche. Ils se demandaient ; “N’est-ce pas là le fils de Joseph ?” Mais il leur dit : “Sûrement vous allez me citer le dicton : ‘Médecin, guéris-toi toi-même. Nous avons appris tout ce qui s’est passé à Capharnaüm : fais donc de même ici dans ton pays !’” Puis il ajouta : “Amen, je vous le dis, aucun prophète n’est bien accueilli dans son pays. En toute vérité, je vous le déclare : au temps du prophète Élie, lorsque la sécheresse et la famine ont sévi pendant trois ans et demi, il y avait beaucoup de veuves en Israël ; pourtant Élie n’a été envoyé vers aucune d’entre elles, mais bien vers une veuve étrangère, de la ville de Sarepta, dans le pays de Sidon. Au temps du prophète Élisée, il y avait beaucoup de lépreux en Israël ; pourtant aucun d’eux n’a été purifié, mais bien Naaman, un Syrien.”

À ces mots, dans la synagogue, tous devinrent furieux. Ils se levèrent, poussèrent Jésus hors de la ville, et le menèrent jusqu’à un escarpement de la colline où la ville est construite, pour le précipiter en bas. Mais lui, passant au milieu d’eux, allait son chemin.

Lesung aus dem Buch Jeremia

In den Tagen Joschijas, des Königs von Juda,

4erging das Wort des Herrn an mich:

5Noch ehe ich dich im Mutterleib formte, habe ich dich ausersehen, noch ehe du aus dem Mutterschoß hervorkamst, habe ich dich geheiligt, zum Propheten für die Völker habe ich dich bestimmt.

17Du aber gürte dich, tritt vor sie hin, und verkünde ihnen alles, was ich dir auftrage. Erschrick nicht vor ihnen, sonst setze ich dich vor ihren Augen in Schrecken.

18Ich selbst mache dich heute zur befestigten Stadt, zur eisernen Säule und zur ehernen Mauer gegen das ganze Land, gegen die Könige, Beamten und Priester von Juda und gegen die Bürger des Landes.

19Mögen sie dich bekämpfen, sie werden dich nicht bezwingen; denn ich bin mit dir, um dich zu retten - Spruch des Herrn.

1 Kor 12, 31 - 13, 13

Lesung aus dem ersten Brief des Apostels Paulus an die Korinther

Brüder!

31Strebt nach den höheren Gnadengaben! Ich zeige euch jetzt noch einen anderen Weg, einen, der alles übersteigt:

1Wenn ich in den Sprachen der Menschen und Engel redete, hätte aber die Liebe nicht, wäre ich dröhnendes Erz oder eine lärmende Pauke.

2Und wenn ich prophetisch reden könnte und alle Geheimnisse wüsste und alle Erkenntnis hätte; wenn ich alle Glaubenskraft besäße und Berge damit versetzen könnte, hätte aber die Liebe nicht, wäre ich nichts.

3Und wenn ich meine ganze Habe verschenkte, und wenn ich meinen Leib dem Feuer übergäbe, hätte aber die Liebe nicht, nützte es mir nichts.

4Die Liebe ist langmütig, die Liebe ist gütig. Sie ereifert sich nicht, sie prahlt nicht, sie bläht sich nicht auf.

5Sie handelt nicht ungehörig, sucht nicht ihren Vorteil, lässt sich nicht zum Zorn reizen, trägt das Böse nicht nach.

6Sie freut sich nicht über das Unrecht, sondern freut sich an der Wahrheit.

7Sie erträgt alles, glaubt alles, hofft alles, hält allem stand.

8Die Liebe hört niemals auf. Prophetisches Reden hat ein Ende, Zungenrede verstummt, Erkenntnis vergeht.

9Denn Stückwerk ist unser Erkennen, Stückwerk unser prophetisches Reden;

10wenn aber das Vollendete kommt, vergeht alles Stückwerk.

11Als ich ein Kind war, redete ich wie ein Kind, dachte wie ein Kind und urteilte wie ein Kind. Als ich ein Mann wurde, legte ich ab, was Kind an mir war.

12Jetzt schauen wir in einen Spiegel und sehen nur rätselhafte Umrisse, dann aber schauen wir von Angesicht zu Angesicht. Jetzt erkenne ich unvollkommen, dann aber werde ich durch und durch erkennen, so wie ich auch durch und durch erkannt worden bin.

13Für jetzt bleiben Glaube, Hoffnung, Liebe, diese drei; doch am größten unter ihnen ist die Liebe.

EVANGELIUM

Lk 4, 21-30

+ Aus dem heiligen Evangelium nach Lukas

In jener Zeit

21begann Jesus in der Synagoge in Nazaret darzulegen: Heute hat sich das Schriftwort, das ihr eben gehört habt, erfüllt.

22Seine Rede fand bei allen Beifall; sie staunten darüber, wie begnadet er redete, und sagten: Ist das nicht der Sohn Josefs?

23Da entgegnete er ihnen: Sicher werdet ihr mir das Sprichwort vorhalten: Arzt, heile dich selbst! Wenn du in Kafarnaum so große Dinge getan hast, wie wir gehört haben, dann tu sie auch hier in deiner Heimat!

24Und er setzte hinzu: Amen, das sage ich euch: Kein Prophet wird in seiner Heimat anerkannt.

25Wahrhaftig, das sage ich euch: In Israel gab es viele Witwen in den Tagen des Elija, als der Himmel für drei Jahre und sechs Monate verschlossen war und eine große Hungersnot über das ganzeLand kam.

26Aber zu keiner von ihnen wurde Elija gesandt, nur zu einer Witwe in Sarepta bei Sidon.

27Und viele Aussätzige gab es in Israel zur Zeit des Propheten Elischa. Aber keiner von ihnen wurde geheilt, nur der Syrer Naaman.

28Als die Leute in der Synagoge das hörten, gerieten sie alle in Wut.

29Sie sprangen auf und trieben Jesus zur Stadt hinaus; sie brachten ihn an den Abhang des Berges, auf dem ihre Stadt erbaut war, und wollten ihn hinabstürzen.

30Er aber schritt mitten durch die Menge hindurch und ging weg.
