SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

Reading 1

Gn 15:5-12, 17-18

The Lord God took Abram outside and said,

“Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can.

Just so,” he added, “shall your descendants be.”

Abram put his faith in the LORD,

who credited it to him as an act of righteousness.

He then said to him,

“I am the LORD who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans

to give you this land as a possession.”

“O Lord GOD,” he asked,

“how am I to know that I shall possess it?”

He answered him,

“Bring me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old she-goat,

a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”

Abram brought him all these, split them in two,

and placed each half opposite the other;

but the birds he did not cut up.

Birds of prey swooped down on the carcasses,

but Abram stayed with them.

As the sun was about to set, a trance fell upon Abram,

and a deep, terrifying darkness enveloped him.

When the sun had set and it was dark,

there appeared a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch,

which passed between those pieces.

It was on that occasion that the LORD made a covenant with Abram,

saying: “To your descendants I give this land,

from the Wadi of Egypt to the GreatRiver, the Euphrates.”

Reading II

Phil 3:17—4:1

Join with others in being imitators of me, brothers and sisters,

and observe those who thus conduct themselves

according to the model you have in us.

For many, as I have often told you

and now tell you even in tears,

conduct themselves as enemies of the cross of Christ.

Their end is destruction.

Their God is their stomach;

their glory is in their “shame.”

Their minds are occupied with earthly things.

But our citizenship is in heaven,

and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

He will change our lowly body

to conform with his glorified body

by the power that enables him also

to bring all things into subjection to himself.

Therefore, my brothers and sisters,

whom I love and long for, my joy and crown,

in this way stand firm in the Lord.

Gospel

Lk 9:28b-36

Jesus took Peter, John, and James

and went up the mountain to pray.

While he was praying his face changed in appearance

and his clothing became dazzling white.

And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah,

who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus

that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem.

Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep,

but becoming fully awake,

they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.

As they were about to part from him, Peter said to Jesus,

“Master, it is good that we are here;

let us make three tents,

one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

But he did not know what he was saying.

While he was still speaking,

a cloud came and cast a shadow over them,

and they became frightened when they entered the cloud.

Then from the cloud came a voice that said,

“This is my chosen Son; listen to him.”

After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone.

They fell silent and did not at that time

tell anyone what they had seen.

Première Lecture

Lecture du livre de la Genèse (15, 5-12. 17-18)

Le Seigneur parlait à Abraham dans une vision. Puis il le fit sortir et lui dit : “Regarde le ciel, et compte les étoiles, si tu le peux...” Et il déclara : “Vois quelle descendance tu auras !” Abraham eut foi dans le Seigneur, et le Seigneur estima qu’il était juste. Puis il dit : “Je suis le Seigneur, qui t’ai fait sortir d’Our en Chaldée pour te mettre en possession de ce pays.” Abraham répondit : “Seigneur mon Dieu, comment vais-je savoir que j’en ai la possession ?” Le Seigneur lui dit : “Prends-moi une génisse de trois ans, une chèvre de trois ans, un bélier de trois ans, une tourterelle et une jeune colombe.” Abraham prit tous ces animaux, les partagea en deux, et plaça chaque moitié en face de l’autre ; mais il ne partagea pas les oiseaux. Comme les rapaces descendaient sur les morceaux, Abraham les écarta. Au coucher du soleil, un sommeil mystérieux s’empara d’Abraham, une sombre et profonde frayeur le saisit. Après le coucher du soleil, il y eut des ténèbres épaisses. Alors un brasier fumant et une torche enflammée passèrent entre les quartiers d’animaux. Ce jour-là, le Seigneur conclut une alliance avec Abraham en ces termes : “À ta descendance je donne le pays que voici.”

Psaume 26 [27]

R.- Le Seigneur est lumière et salut.

Le Seigneur est ma lumière et mon salut,

de qui aurais-je crainte ?

Le Seigneur est le rempart de ma vie,

devant qui tremblerais-je ? R.-

Écoute, Seigneur, je t’appelle !

Pitié ! Réponds-moi !

Mon cœur m’a redit ta parole:

“Cherchez ma face”. R.-

C’est ta face, Seigneur, que je cherche :

ne me cache pas ta face.

N’écarte pas ton serviteur avec colère,

Deuxième Lecture

Lecture de la lettre de saint Paul Apôtre aux Philippiens (3,17 - 4,1)

Frères, prenez-moi tous pour modèle, et regardez bien ceux qui vivent selon l’exemple que nous vous donnons. Car je vous l’ai souvent dit, et maintenant je le redis en pleurant : beaucoup de gens vivent en ennemis de la croix du Christ. Ils vont tous à leur perte. Leur dieu, c’est leur ventre, et ils mettent leur gloire dans ce qui fait leur honte ; ils ne tendent que vers les choses de la terre.

Mais nous, nous sommes citoyens des cieux ; c’est à ce titre que nous attendons comme sauveur le Seigneur Jésus Christ, lui qui transformera nos pauvres corps à l’image de son corps glorieux, avec la puissance qui le rend capable aussi de tout dominer.

Ainsi, mes frères bien-aimés que je désire tant revoir, vous, ma joie et ma récompense, tenez bon dans le Seigneur, mes bien-aimés.

Évangile

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc (9, 28b-36)

Jésus prit avec lui Pierre, Jean et Jacques, et il alla sur la montagne pour prier. Pendant qu’il priait, son visage apparut tout autre, ses vêtements devinrent d’une blancheur éclatante. Et deux hommes s’entretenaient avec lui : c’étaient Moïse et Élie, apparus dans la gloire. Ils parlaient de son départ qui allait se réaliser à Jérusalem. Pierre et ses compagnons étaient accablés de sommeil ; mais, se réveillant, ils virent la gloire de Jésus, et les deux hommes à ses côtés. Ces derniers s’en allaient, quand Pierre dit à Jésus : “Maître, il est heureux que nous soyons ici ; dressons trois tentes : une pour toi, une pour Moïse, et une pour Élie.” Il ne savait pas ce qu’il disait. Pierre n’avait pas fini de parler, qu’une nuée survint et les couvrit de son ombre ; ils furent saisis de frayeur lorsqu’ils y pénétrèrent. Et, de la nuée, une voix se fit entendre : “Celui-ci est mon Fils, celui que j’ai choisi, écoutez-le.”

Quand la voix eut retenti, on ne vit plus que Jésus seul. Les disciples gardèrent le silence et, de ce qu’ils avaient vu, ils ne dirent rien à personne à ce moment-là.

In jenen Tagen führte der Herr Abram hinaus und sprach: Sieh zum Himmel hinauf, und zähl die Sterne, wenn du sie zählen kannst. Und er sprach zu ihm: So zahlreich werden deine Nachkommen sein.

Abram glaubte dem Herrn, und der Herr rechnete es ihm als Gerechtigkeit an.

Er sprach zu ihm: Ich bin der Herr, der dich aus Ur in Chaldäa herausgeführt hat, um dir diesesLand zu Eigen zu geben.

Da sagte Abram: Herr, mein Herr, woran soll ich erkennen, dass ich es zu Eigen bekomme?

Der Herr antwortete ihm: Hol mir ein dreijähriges Rind, eine dreijährige Ziege, einen dreijährigen Widder, eine Turteltaube und eine Haustaube!

Abram brachte ihm alle diese Tiere, zerteilte sie und legte je eine Hälfte der andern gegenüber; die Vögel aber zerteilte er nicht.

Da stießen Raubvögel auf die Fleischstücke herab, doch Abram verscheuchte sie.

Bei Sonnenuntergang fiel auf Abram ein tiefer Schlaf; große, unheimliche Angst überfiel ihn.

Die Sonne war untergegangen, und es war dunkel geworden. Auf einmal waren ein rauchender Ofen und eine lodernde Fackel da; sie fuhren zwischen jenen Fleischstücken hindurch.

An diesem Tag schloss der Herr mit Abram folgenden Bund: Deinen Nachkommen gebe ich dieses Land vom Grenzbach Ägyptens bis zum großen Strom, dem Eufrat.

Antwortpsalm Ps 27 (26), 1.7-8.9.13-14 (R: 1a)

R.- Der Herr ist mein Licht und mein Heil.

ZWEITE Lesung Phil 3, 17 - 4, 1

Lesung aus dem Brief des Apostels Paulus an die Philipper

Ahmt auch ihr mich nach, Brüder, und achtet auf jene, die nach dem Vorbild leben, das ihr an uns habt.

Denn viele - von denen ich oft zu euch gesprochen habe, doch jetzt unter Tränen spreche - leben als Feinde des Kreuzes Christi.

Ihr Ende ist das Verderben, ihr Gott der Bauch; ihr Ruhm besteht in ihrer Schande; Irdisches haben sie im Sinn.

Unsere Heimat aber ist im Himmel. Von dorther erwarten wir auch Jesus Christus, den Herrn, als Retter, der unseren armseligen Leib verwandeln wird in die Gestalt seines verherrlichten Leibes, in der Kraft, mit der er sich alles unterwerfen kann.

Darum, meine geliebten Brüder, nach denen ich mich sehne, meine Freude und mein Ehrenkranz, steht fest in der Gemeinschaft mit dem Herrn, liebe Brüder.

Evangelium Lk 9, 28b-36

Aus dem heiligen Evangelium nach Lukas

In jener Zeit bnahm Jesus Petrus, Johannes und Jakobus beiseite und stieg mit ihnen auf einen Berg, um zu beten.

Und während er betete, veränderte sich das Aussehen seines Gesichtes, und sein Gewand wurde leuchtend weiß.

Und plötzlich redeten zwei Männer mit ihm. Es waren Mose und Elija; 31sie erschienen in strahlendem Licht und sprachen von seinem Ende, das sich in Jerusalem erfüllen sollte.

Petrus und seine Begleiter aber waren eingeschlafen, wurden jedoch wach und sahen Jesus in strahlendem Licht und die zwei Männer, die bei ihm standen.

Als die beiden sich von ihm trennen wollten, sagte Petrus zu Jesus: Meister, es ist gut, dass wir hier sind. Wir wollen drei Hütten bauen, eine für dich, eine für Mose und eine für Elija. Er wusste aber nicht, was er sagte.

Während er noch redete, kam eine Wolke und warf ihren Schatten auf sie. Sie gerieten in die Wolke hinein und bekamen Angst.

Da rief eine Stimme aus der Wolke: Das ist mein auserwählter Sohn, auf ihn sollt ihr hören.

Als aber die Stimme erklang, war Jesus wieder allein. Die Jünger schwiegen jedoch über das, was sie gesehen hatten, und erzählten in jenen Tagen niemand davon.
