Fourth Sunday of Lent

First Reading

Joshua 5:9-12

The Lord said to Joshua, 'Today I have taken the shame of Egypt away from you.'The Israelites pitched their camp at Gilgal and kept the Passover there on the fourteenth day of the month, at evening in the plain of Jericho. On the morrow of the Passover they tasted the produce of that country, unleavened bread and roasted ears of corn, that same day. From that time, from their first eating of the produce of that country, the manna stopped falling. And having manna no longer, the Israelites fed from that year onwards on what the land of Canaan yielded.

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 33:2-7

R: Taste and see that the Lord is good.

I will bless the Lord at all times,

his praise always on my lips;

in the Lord my soul shall make its boast

The humble shall hear and be glad.

Glorify the Lord with me. R.-

Together let us praise his name.

I sought the Lord and he answered me;

from all my terrors he set me free.

Look towards him and be radiant;

let your faces not be abashed. R.-

This poor man called; the Lord heard him

and rescued him from all his distress. R.-

Second Reading

2 Corinthians 5:17-21

For anyone who is in Christ, there is new creation; the old creation has gone, and now the new one his here. It is all God's work. It was God who reconciled is to himself through Christ and gave us the work of handing on this reconciliation. In other words, God in Christ was reconciling the world to himself, not holding men's faults against them, and he has entrusted to us the news that they are reconciled. So we are ambassadors for Christ; it is as though God were appealing through us, and the appeal that we make in Christ's name is: be reconciled to God. For our sake God made the sinless one into sin, so that in him we might become the goodness of God.

Luke 15:1-3.11-32

The tax collectors and the sinners were all seeking the company of Jesus to hear what he had to say, and the Pharisees and the scribes complained. 'This man', they said, 'welcomes sinners and eats with them.' So he spoke this parable to them:

'A man had two sons. The younger said to his father, 'Father, let me have the share of the estate that would come to me.' So the father divided the property between them. A few days later, the younger son got together everything he had and left for a distant country where he squandered his money on a life of debauchery.

'When he had spent it all, that country experienced a severe famine, and now he began to feel the pinch, so he hired himself out to one of the local inhabitants who put him on his farm to feed the pigs. And he would willingly have filled his belly with the husks the pigs were eating but no one offered him anything. Then he came to his senses and said, 'How many of my father's paid servants have more food than they want, and here am I dying of hunger! I will leave this place and go to my father and say: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as one of your paid servants.' So he left the place and went back to his father.

'While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with pity. He ran to the boy, clasped him in his arms and kissed him tenderly. Then his son said, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your Son.' But the father said to his servants, 'Quick! Bring out the best robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the calf we have been fattening, and kill it; we are going to have a feast, a celebration, because this son of mine was dead and has come back to life; he was lost and is found.' And they began to celebrate.

'Now the elder son was out in the fields, and on his way back, as he drew near the house, he could hear music and dancing. Calling one of the servants he asked what it was all about. 'Your brother has come,' replied the servant,' and your father has killed the calf we had fattened because he has got him back safe and sound.' He was angry then and refused to go in, and his father came out to plead with him, but he answered his father, 'Look, all these years I have slaved for you and never once disobeyed your orders, yet you never offered me so much as a kid for me to celebrate with my friends. But, for this son of yours, when he comes back after swallowing up your property - he and his women - you kill the calf we had been fattening.'

'The father said, 'My son, you are with me always and all I have is yours. But it was only right we should celebrate and rejoice, because your brother here was dead and has come to life; he was lost and is found.' '

Première lecture

Lecture du livre de Josué (5, 10-12)

Après le passage du Jourdain, les fils d’Israël campèrent à Guilgal et célébrèrent la Pâque le quatorzième jour du mois, vers le soir, dans la plaine de Jéricho. Le lendemain de la Pâque, ils mangèrent les produits de cette terre : des pains sans levain et des épis grillés. À partir de ce jour, la manne cessa de tomber, puisqu’ils mangeaient les produits de la terre. Il n’y avait plus de manne pour les fils d’Israël, qui mangèrent cette année-là ce qu’ils récoltèrent sur la terre de Canaan.

Psaume 33 [34]

R.- Goûtez et voyez comme est bon le Seigneur !

Je bénirai le Seigneur en tout temps,

sa louange sans cesse à mes lèvres.

Je me glorifierai dans le Seigneur :

que les pauvres m’entendent et soient en fête ! R.-

Magnifiez avec moi le Seigneur,

exaltons tous ensemble son nom.

Je cherche le Seigneur, il me répond :

de toutes mes frayeurs, il me délivre. R.-

Qui regarde vers lui resplendira,

sans ombre ni trouble au visage.

Un pauvre crie ; le Seigneur entend:

il le sauve de toutes ses angoisses. R.-

Deuxième lecture

Lecture de la seconde lettre de saint Paul Apôtre aux Corinthiens (5, 17-21)

Frères, si quelqu’un est en Jésus Christ, il est une créature nouvelle. Le monde ancien s’en est allé, un monde nouveau est déjà né. Tout cela vient de Dieu : il nous a réconciliés avec lui par le Christ, et il nous a donné pour ministère de travailler à cette réconciliation. Car c’est bien Dieu qui, dans le Christ, réconciliait le monde avec lui ; il effaçait pour tous les hommes le compte de leurs péchés, et il mettait dans notre bouche la parole de la réconciliation. Nous sommes donc les ambassadeurs du Christ, et par nous c’est Dieu lui-même qui, en fait, vous adresse un appel. Au nom du Christ, nous vous le demandons, laissez-vous réconcilier avec Dieu. Celui qui n’a pas connu le péché, Dieu l’a pour nous identifié au péché des hommes, afin que, grâce à lui, nous soyons identifiés à la justice de Dieu.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc (15, 1-3. 11-32)

Les publicains et les pécheurs venaient tous à Jésus pour l’écouter. Les pharisiens et les scribes récriminaient contre lui : “Cet homme fait bon accueil aux pécheurs, et mange avec eux !” Alors Jésus leur dit cette parabole : “Un homme avait deux fils. Le plus jeune dit à son père : ‘Père, donne-moi la part d’héritage qui me revient.’ Et le père fit le partage de ses biens. Peu de jours après, le plus jeune rassembla tout ce qu’il avait et partit pour un pays lointain, où il gaspilla sa fortune en menant une vie de désordre. Quand il eut tout dépensé, une grande famine survint dans cette région, et il commença à se trouver dans la misère. Il alla s’embaucher chez un homme du pays qui l’envoya dans ses champs garder les porcs. Il aurait bien voulu se remplir le ventre avec les gousses que mangeaient les porcs, mais personne ne lui donnait rien. Alors il réfléchit : ‘Tant d’ouvriers chez mon père ont du pain en abondance, et moi, ici, je meurs de faim ! Je vais retourner chez mon père, et je lui dirai : Père, j’ai péché contre le ciel et contre toi. Je ne mérite plus d’être appelé ton fils. Prends-moi comme l’un de tes ouvriers.’ Il partit donc pour aller chez son père. Comme il était encore loin, son père l’aperçut et fut saisi de pitié ; il courut se jeter à son cou et le couvrit de baisers. Le fils lui dit : ‘Père j’ai péché contre le ciel et contre toi. Je ne mérite plus d’être appelé ton fils...’ Mais le père dit à ses domestiques : ‘Vite, apportez le plus beau vêtement pour l’habiller. Mettez-lui une bague au doigt et des sandales aux pieds. Allez chercher le veau gras, tuez-le ; mangeons et festoyons. Car mon fils que voilà était mort, et il est revenu à la vie ; il était perdu, et il est retrouvé.’ Et ils commencèrent la fête.

Le fils aîné était aux champs. À son retour, quand il fut près de la maison, il entendit la musique et les danses. Appelant un des domestiques, il demanda ce qui se passait. Celui-ci répondit : ‘C’est ton frère qui est de retour. Et ton père a tué le veau gras, parce qu’il a vu revenir son fils en bonne santé.’ Alors le fils aîné se mit en colère, et il refusait d’entrer. Son père, qui était sorti, le suppliait. Mais il répliqua : ‘Il y a tant d’années que je suis à ton service sans avoir jamais désobéi à tes ordres, et jamais tu ne m’as donné un chevreau pour festoyer avec mes amis. Mais, quand ton fils que voilà est arrivé, après avoir dépensé ton bien avec des filles, tu as fait tuer pour lui le veau gras !’ Le père répondit : ‘Toi, mon enfant, tu es toujours avec moi, et tout ce qui est à moi est à toi. Il fallait bien festoyer et se réjouir ; car ton frère que voilà était mort, et il est revenu à la vie ; il était perdu, et il est retrouvé.’”

ERSTE Lesung Jos 5, 9a.10-12

Lesung aus dem Buch Josua

In jenen Tagen asagte der Herr zu Josua: Heute habe ich die ägyptische Schande von euch abgewälzt. Als die Israeliten in Gilgal ihr Lager hatten, feierten sie am Abend des vierzehnten Tages jenes Monats in den Steppen von Jericho das Pascha.

Am Tag nach dem Pascha, genau an diesem Tag, aßen sie ungesäuerte Brote und geröstetes Getreide aus den Erträgen des Landes.

Vom folgenden Tag an, nachdem sie von den Erträgen des Landes gegessen hatten, blieb das Manna aus; von da an hatten die Israeliten kein Manna mehr, denn sie aßen in jenem Jahr von der Ernte des Landes Kanaan.

Antwortpsalm Ps 34 (33), 2-3.4-5.6-7 (R: 9a)

R Kostet und seht, wie gütig der Herr ist!

Ich will den Herrn allezeit preisen;

immer sei sein Lob in meinem Mund.

Meine Seele rühme sich des Herrn;

ZWEITE Lesung 2 Kor 5, 17-21

Lesung aus dem zweiten Brief des Apostels Paulus an die Korinther

Brüder!

Wenn jemand in Christus ist, dann ist er eine neue Schöpfung: Das Alte ist vergangen, Neues ist geworden.

Aber das alles kommt von Gott, der uns durch Christus mit sich versöhnt und uns den Dienst der Versöhnung aufgetragen hat.

Ja, Gott war es, der in Christus die Welt mit sich versöhnt hat, indem er den Menschen ihre Verfehlungen nicht anrechnete und uns das Wort von der Versöhnung zur Verkündigung anvertraute.

Wir sind also Gesandte an Christi statt, und Gott ist es, der durch uns mahnt. Wir bitten an Christi statt: Lasst euch mit Gott versöhnen!

Er hat den, der keine Sünde kannte, für uns zur Sünde gemacht, damit wir in ihm Gerechtigkeit Gottes würden.

Evangelium Lk 15, 1-3.11-32

Aus dem heiligen Evangelium nach Lukas

In jener Zeit kamen alle Zöllner und Sünder zu Jesus, um ihn zu hören.

Die Pharisäer und die Schriftgelehrten empörten sich darüber und sagten: Er gibt sich mit Sündern ab und isst sogar mit ihnen.

Da erzählte er ihnen ein Gleichnis und sagte: Weiter sagte Jesus: Ein Mann hatte zwei Söhne.

Der jüngere von ihnen sagte zu seinem Vater: Vater, gib mir das Erbteil, das mir zusteht. Da teilte der Vater das Vermögen auf.

Nach wenigen Tagen packte der jüngere Sohn alles zusammen und zog in ein fernesLand. Dort führte er ein zügelloses Leben und verschleuderte sein Vermögen.

Als er alles durchgebracht hatte, kam eine große Hungersnot über dasLand, und es ging ihm sehr schlecht.

Da ging er zu einem Bürger des Landes und drängte sich ihm auf; der schickte ihn aufs Feld zum Schweinehüten.

Er hätte gern seinen Hunger mit den Futterschoten gestillt, die die Schweine fraßen; aber niemand gab ihm davon.

Da ging er in sich und sagte: Wie viele Tagelöhner meines Vaters haben mehr als genug zu essen, und ich komme hier vor Hunger um.

Ich will aufbrechen und zu meinem Vater gehen und zu ihm sagen: Vater, ich habe mich gegen den Himmel und gegen dich versündigt.

Ich bin nicht mehr wert, dein Sohn zu sein; mach mich zu einem deiner Tagelöhner.

Dann brach er auf und ging zu seinem Vater. Der Vater sah ihn schon von weitem kommen, und er hatte Mitleid mit ihm. Er lief dem Sohn entgegen, fiel ihm um den Hals und küsste ihn.

Da sagte der Sohn: Vater, ich habe mich gegen den Himmel und gegen dich versündigt; ich bin nicht mehr wert, dein Sohn zu sein.

Der Vater aber sagte zu seinen Knechten: Holt schnell das beste Gewand, und zieht es ihm an, steckt ihm einen Ring an die Hand, und zieht ihm Schuhe an.

Bringt das Mastkalb her, und schlachtet es; wir wollen essen und fröhlich sein.

Denn mein Sohn war tot und lebt wieder; er war verloren und ist wieder gefunden worden. Und sie begannen, ein fröhliches Fest zu feiern.

Sein älterer Sohn war unterdessen auf dem Feld. Als er heimging und in die Nähe des Hauses kam, hörte er Musik und Tanz.

Da rief er einen der Knechte und fragte, was das bedeuten solle.

Der Knecht antwortete: Dein Bruder ist gekommen, und dein Vater hat das Mastkalb schlachten lassen, weil er ihn heil und gesund wiederbekommen hat.

Da wurde er zornig und wollte nicht hineingehen. Sein Vater aber kam heraus und redete ihm gut zu.

Doch er erwiderte dem Vater: So viele Jahre schon diene ich dir, und nie habe ich gegen deinen Willen gehandelt; mir aber hast du nie auch nur einen Ziegenbock geschenkt, damit ich mit meinen Freunden ein Fest feiern konnte.

Kaum aber ist der hier gekommen, dein Sohn, der dein Vermögen mit Dirnen durchgebracht hat, da hast du für ihn das Mastkalb geschlachtet.

Der Vater antwortete ihm: Mein Kind, du bist immer bei mir, und alles, was mein ist, ist auch dein. Aber jetzt müssen wir uns doch freuen und ein Fest feiern; denn dein Bruder war tot und lebt wieder; er war verloren und ist wieder gefunden worde
