Reading 1

1 Kgs 19:16b, 19-21

The LORD said to Elijah:

“You shall anoint Elisha, son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah,

as prophet to succeed you.”

Elijah set out and came upon Elisha, son of Shaphat,

as he was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen;

he was following the twelfth.

Elijah went over to him and threw his cloak over him.

Elisha left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said,

“Please, let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,

and I will follow you.”

Elijah answered, “Go back!

Have I done anything to you?”

Elisha left him, and taking the yoke of oxen, slaughtered them;

he used the plowing equipment for fuel to boil their flesh,

and gave it to his people to eat.

Then Elisha left and followed Elijah as his attendant.

Responsorial Psalm

Ps 16:1-2, 5, 7-8, 9-10, 11

R.- You are my inheritance, O Lord.

Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge;

I say to the LORD, “My Lord are you.

O LORD, my allotted portion and my cup,

Reading II

Gal 5:1, 13-18

Brothers and sisters:

For freedom Christ set us free;

so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.

For you were called for freedom, brothers and sisters.

But do not use this freedom

as an opportunity for the flesh;

rather, serve one another through love.

For the whole law is fulfilled in one statement,

namely, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

But if you go on biting and devouring one another,

beware that you are not consumed by one another.

I say, then: live by the Spirit

and you will certainly not gratify the desire of the flesh.

For the flesh has desires against the Spirit,

and the Spirit against the flesh;

these are opposed to each other,

so that you may not do what you want.

But if you are guided by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

Gospel

Lk 9:51-62

When the days for Jesus’ being taken up were fulfilled,

he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem,

and he sent messengers ahead of him.

On the way they entered a Samaritan village

to prepare for his reception there,

but they would not welcome him

because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem.

When the disciples James and John saw this they asked,

“Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven

to consume them?”

Jesus turned and rebuked them, and they journeyed to another village.

As they were proceeding on their journey someone said to him,

“I will follow you wherever you go.”

Jesus answered him,

“Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests,

but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.”

And to another he said, “Follow me.”

But he replied, “Lord, let me go first and bury my father.”

But he answered him, “Let the dead bury their dead.

But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

And another said, “I will follow you, Lord,

but first let me say farewell to my family at home.”

To him Jesus said, “No one who sets a hand to the plow

and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Première lecture:

Lecture du premier livre des Rois (19, 16b. 19-21)

Le Seigneur avait dit au prophète Élie : “Tu consacreras Élisée, fils de Shafate, comme prophète pour te succéder.” Élie s’en alla. Il trouva Élisée, fils de Shafate, en train de labourer. Il avait à labourer douze arpents, et il en était au douzième. Élie passa près de lui et jeta vers lui son manteau. Alors Élisée quitta ses bœufs, courut derrière Élie, et lui dit : “Laisse-moi embrasser mon père et ma mère, puis je te suivrai.” Élie répondit : “Va-t’en, retourne là-bas ! Je n’ai rien fait.” Alors Élisée s’en retourna ; mais il prit la paire de bœufs pour les immoler, les fit cuire avec le bois de l’attelage, et les donna à manger aux gens. Puis il se leva, partit à la suite d’Élie et se mit à son service.

Psaume 15 [16]

R.- Dieu, mon bonheur et ma joie !

Garde-moi, mon Dieu : j’ai fait de toi mon refuge.

J’ai dit au Seigneur : “Tu es mon Dieu !

Seigneur, mon partage et ma coupe :

de toi dépend mon sort.” R.-

Je bénis le Seigneur qui me conseille :

même la nuit mon cœur m’avertit.

Je garde le Seigneur devant moi sans relâche ;

il est à ma droite : je suis inébranlable. R.-

Mon cœur exulte, mon âme est en fête,

ma chair elle-même repose en confiance :

tu ne peux m’abandonner à la mort,

ni laisser ton ami voir la corruption. R.-

Je n’ai pas d’autre bonheur que toi.

Deuxième lecture:

Lecture de la lettre de saint Paul Apôtre aux Galates (5, 1. 13-18)

Frères, si le Christ nous a libérés, c’est pour que nous soyons vraiment libres. Alors tenez bon, et ne reprenez pas les chaînes de votre ancien esclavage. Vous avez été appelés à la liberté. Mais que cette liberté ne soit pas un prétexte pour satisfaire votre égoïsme ; au contraire, mettez-vous, par amour, au service les uns des autres. Car toute la Loi atteint sa perfection dans un seul commandement, et le voici : tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi-même. Si vous vous mordez et vous dévorez les uns les autres, prenez garde : vous allez vous détruire les uns les autres. Je vous le dis : vivez sous la conduite de l’Esprit de Dieu ; alors vous n’obéirez pas aux tendances égoïstes de la chair. Car les tendances de la chair s’opposent à l’esprit, et les tendances de l’esprit s’opposent à la chair. En effet, il y a là un affrontement qui vous empêche de faire ce que vous voudriez. Mais en vous laissant conduire par l’Esprit, vous n’êtes plus sujets de la Loi.

Évangile

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc (9, 51-62)

Comme le temps approchait où Jésus allait être enlevé de ce monde, il prit avec courage la route de Jérusalem. Il envoya des messagers devant lui ; ceux-ci se mirent en route et entrèrent dans un village de Samaritains pour préparer sa venue. Mais on refusa de le recevoir, parce qu’il se dirigeait vers Jérusalem. Devant ce refus, les disciples Jacques et Jean intervinrent : “Seigneur, veux-tu que nous ordonnions que le feu tombe du ciel pour les détruire ?” Mais Jésus se retourna et les interpella vivement. Et ils partirent pour un autre village.

En cours de route, un homme dit à Jésus : “Je te suivrai partout où tu iras.” Jésus lui déclara : “Les renards ont des terriers, les oiseaux du ciel ont des nids ; mais le Fils de l’homme n’a pas d’endroit où reposer la tête.”

Il dit à un autre : “Suis-moi.” L’homme répondit : “Permets-moi d’aller d’abord enterrer mon père.” Mais Jésus répliqua : “Laisse les morts enterrer leurs morts. Toi, va annoncer le règne de Dieu.”

Un autre encore lui dit : “Je te suivrai, Seigneur ; mais laisse-moi d’abord faire mes adieux aux gens de ma maison.” Jésus lui répondit : “Celui qui met la main à la charrue et regarde en arrière n’est pas fait pour le royaume de Dieu.”

1. Lesung 1 Kön 19, 16b.19-21

Lesung aus dem ersten Buch der Könige

Salbe Elischa, den Sohn Schafats aus Abel-Mehola, zum Propheten an deiner Stelle.

Als Elija von dort weggegangen war, traf er Elischa, den Sohn Schafats. Er war gerade mit zwölf Gespannen am Pflügen, und er selbst pflügte mit dem zwölften. Im Vorbeigehen warf Elija seinen Mantel über ihn.

Sogleich verließ Elischa die Rinder, eilte Elija nach und bat ihn: Lass mich noch meinem Vater und meiner Mutter den Abschiedskuss geben; dann werde ich dir folgen. Elija antwortete: Geh, aber komm dann zurück! Bedenke, was ich an dir getan habe.

Elischa ging von ihm weg, nahm seine zwei Rinder und schlachtete sie. Mit dem Joch der Rinder kochte er das Fleisch und setzte es den Leuten zum Essen vor. Dann stand er auf, folgte Elija und trat in seinen Dienst.

R Du, Herr, bist mein Erbe, mein ganzes Glück bist du allein.

Behüte mich, Gott, denn ich vertraue dir

2. Lesung Gal 5, 1.13-18

Lesung aus dem Brief des Apostels Paulus an die Galater

Zur Freiheit hat uns Christus befreit. Bleibt daher fest und lasst euch nicht von neuem das Joch der Knechtschaft auflegen!

Ihr seid zur Freiheit berufen, Brüder. Nur nehmt die Freiheit nicht zum Vorwand für das Fleisch, sondern dient einander in Liebe!

Denn das ganze Gesetz ist in dem einen Wort zusammengefasst: Du sollst deinen Nächsten lieben wie dich selbst!

Wenn ihr einander beißt und verschlingt, dann gebt acht, dass ihr euch nicht gegenseitig umbringt.

Darum sage ich: Lasst euch vom Geist leiten, dann werdet ihr das Begehren des Fleisches nicht erfüllen.

Denn das Begehren des Fleisches richtet sich gegen den Geist, das Begehren des Geistes aber gegen das Fleisch; beide stehen sich als Feinde gegenüber, so dass ihr nicht imstande seid, das zu tun, was ihr wollt.

Wenn ihr euch aber vom Geist führen lasst, dann steht ihr nicht unter dem Gesetz.

Evangelium Lk 9, 51-62

Aus dem heiligen Evangelium nach Lukas

Als die Zeit herankam, in der er (in den Himmel) aufgenommen werden sollte, entschloss sich Jesus, nach Jerusalem zu gehen.

Und er schickte Boten vor sich her. Diese kamen in ein samaritisches Dorf und wollten eine Unterkunft für ihn besorgen.

Aber man nahm ihn nicht auf, weil er auf dem Weg nach Jerusalem war.

Als die Jünger Jakobus und Johannes das sahen, sagten sie: Herr, sollen wir befehlen, dass Feuer vom Himmel fällt und sie vernichtet?

Da wandte er sich um und wies sie zurecht.

Und sie gingen zusammen in ein anderes Dorf.

Als sie auf ihrem Weg weiterzogen, redete ein Mann Jesus an und sagte: Ich will dir folgen, wohin du auch gehst.

Jesus antwortete ihm: Die Füchse haben ihre Höhlen und die Vögel ihre Nester; der Menschensohn aber hat keinen Ort, wo er sein Haupt hinlegen kann.

Zu einem anderen sagte er: Folge mir nach! Der erwiderte: Lass mich zuerst heimgehen und meinen Vater begraben.

esus sagte zu ihm: Lass die Toten ihre Toten begraben; du aber geh und verkünde das Reich Gottes!

Wieder ein anderer sagte: Ich will dir nachfolgen, Herr. Zuvor aber lass mich von meiner Familie Abschied nehmen.

Jesus erwiderte ihm: Keiner, der die Hand an den Pflug gelegt hat und nochmals zurückblickt, taugt für das Reich Gottes.
